Preparation & Seasoning
Rinse the whole chicken thoroughly inside and out under cold water and pat dry with paper towels. For the BBQ rub, thoroughly mix the cane sugar, smoked paprika powder, garlic powder, onion powder, sea salt, and freshly ground pepper in a small bowl.
Rub the chicken thinly all over with rapeseed oil so that the spices adhere optimally. Then massage the entire spice mixture evenly and generously onto the skin and inside the cavity of the chicken.
Grilling on the Beer Can
Prepare the kettle grill or gas grill for indirect medium heat (approx. 160–180 °C). Open the beer can and pour off (or drink) about one-third of the beer so that it does not boil over during heating. Punch additional holes in the top using a can opener to allow the aromatic steam to escape better.
Chef's tip
Alternative preparation in the oven: Beer can chicken can be prepared just as wonderfully in the oven. Simply place the can on a baking sheet lined with baking paper at 170 °C convection on the bottom rack.
Flavor variations: Add a sprig of fresh rosemary or a crushed garlic clove to the beer can for an even more intense herbal aroma.
