Preparation method
Preparation & Cooking Lentils
Rinse the basmati rice thoroughly under cold running water until the water runs clear. Then bring to a boil with 400 ml of lightly salted water, reduce the heat, cover, and let gently simmer for about 12–15 minutes.
Peel the carrots and cut them into thin slices. Wash the vine tomatoes and roughly dice them. Finely chop the onion, garlic, and ginger.
Briefly rinse the red lentils in a sieve. Bring to a boil in a large pot together with the carrot slices, 600 ml of water, turmeric powder, and half of the salt. Simmer over medium heat for about 15 minutes until the lentils are wonderfully soft and break down into a creamy consistency.
Chef's tip
For an extra creamy texture, you can lightly purée a small portion of the lentils directly in the pot using a whisk at the end.
Sambar dal tastes almost even better the next day: Feel free to prepare double the amount for meal prep!
