First, peel the onions and dice them finely along with the pickled gherkins.

Slice the hot dog buns lengthwise in the middle (do not cut all the way through) and briefly toast them in the oven or a pan until lightly crispy.

Let the Frankfurter sausages simmer in hot (not boiling) water for about 5 minutes.
