Pioneers of biodynamic viticulture in Austria

Stephanie and Eduard Tscheppe from Gut Oggau are leaders in biodynamic viticulture in Austria. They have managed to get their natural wines onto the best wine lists in the world. Their approach is unconventional: instead of the grape varieties, the personalities of the vineyards are in the foreground, expressed in three generations of wines.

Wine generations:

• Youth: Wines like Athanasius, Theodora, and Winifred are accessible and fruit-driven.

• Parent generation: It includes diverse styles, among them the aromatic Emmeram and the mineral Timotheus.

• Grandparent generation: The wines Mechthild and Bertholdi come from the oldest vineyards and offer a fine, dense structure.

They have been practicing biodynamic viticulture for almost 20 years. The red wines have become livelier, while the white wines have gained in depth. In the cellar, they rely on a "low intervention" philosophy: spontaneous fermentation, aging on the fine lees, no filtration or sulfuring.

Regional connection:

The wines are a tribute to the region around Lake Neusiedl and the chalky soils of Oggau. The Heurige von Gut Oggau offers guests an inviting hospitality that reflects the regional roots and cosmopolitan attitude of the winemakers.
