Lutamax® AREDS 2 capsules are used for the dietary management of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). They contain a special combination of lutein, zeaxanthin, the antioxidant vitamins C and E, and the trace elements zinc and copper. Lutamax® AREDS 2 capsules are recommended for moderate to advanced stages of AMD.

The basis for the development of Lutamax® AREDS 2 capsules was the AREDS-2 study (Age Related Eye Disease Study-2), which was conducted between 2005 and 2012 in the USA at a large number of renowned hospitals. This study demonstrated that the continuous and daily administration of lutein, high-dose antioxidants such as vitamins E and C, and zinc can significantly delay the progression of AMD.

Lutein protects the photoreceptor cells from high-energy short-wave light (blue light) because it is a very efficient blue light filter. This reduces the risk of free radicals forming, which can damage the retina, and acts like natural sunglasses for the eye. In addition to lutein,  Lutamax® AREDS 2 also contains zeaxanthin, a substance derived from lutein that has similar properties. Zeaxanthin is primarily found in the macula lutea, the central part of the retina. Both substances are natural and are extracted from a plant extract of the marigold flower.

Vitamins C and E are important for the health of our eyes because they can protect the photoreceptor cells. They bind free radicals that form in the retina, thereby reducing oxidative stress. This allows the photoreceptor cells to remain functional for longer.

Usage

Recommended intake

For age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in the moderate or advanced stage, continuous daily intake of two Lutamax® AREDS 2 capsules is recommended. These can be taken either together or divided into two doses (morning/evening).

Important note:

Continuous daily intake of Lutamax® AREDS 2 is important. If intake is stopped or interrupted for a longer period, the levels in the retina and blood will significantly decrease again within a few weeks. Only with continuous intake can the protective effect of the substances for the eye unfold.

Ingredients: Vitamin C (calcium ascorbate), Vitamin E (d,l-α-tocopheryl acetate), Zinc (zinc oxide), Copper (copper oxide), Lutein, Zeaxanthin, Safflower oil, Sunflower lecithin, Beeswax, Bovine gelatin, Glycerin, Colorants (lycopene, beta-carotene, calcium carbonate).

One soft capsule contains 5 mg lutein and 1 mg zeaxanthin.
