Description

You're reading an Auto-translation.

Romaine lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. longifolia) is also known as cos lettuce, romaine, or cos. It is a variety of lettuce. The colloquial name "bindesalat" refers to the fact that in the past, the outer leaves were tied together to blanch the inner ones. With newer varieties of romaine lettuce, tying together is no longer necessary, as their leaves grow upright and closed on their own. Depending on the variety, the heads are more or less closed and the leaves are green or brownish red in color.

Use

The heads of Lactuca sativa var. longifolia can be stored in the refrigerator for a few days. In general, the leaves of romaine lettuce are crispier and somewhat spicier than those of head lettuce. Tip: You can cook the fleshy stalks of some varieties like asparagus and then refine them with butter, salt, and pepper.

About the producer

Our small organic nursery called Fleischhacker is located in Simmering, a historic vegetable supply district of Vienna. The family business has been in existence for over 100 years and is now being managed by us in the 4th generation.

Sustainability and the conscious use of nature and its resources are very important to us, which is why we have opted for organic farming. On approx. 2 ha we produce seasonal organic vegetables all year round.

Storage recommendation

Lettuce should always be stored in the refrigerator, ideally at 5° C and high humidity. The vegetable compartment is best suited for this.
