Cucumbers should not be peeled. The peel contains valuable ingredients, such as many vitamins. Only if you do not tolerate cucumbers well, it can be advantageous to remove the peel, because it is more difficult to digest than the inside of the cucumber. You should wash the cucumber with cold water.
Cucumbers can taste bitter at the stem. This is caused by cucurbitacins, which can also be found in other vegetables such as zucchini. It is therefore advisable to taste the first piece after the stem. If this end of the cucumber is bitter, cut off a few centimeters and then taste again – the bitter piece should be spat out. Repeat this step until there is no more bitter taste. The rest of the cucumber can be eaten. The bitter substances can spread through the whole cucumber in high concentrations. They are not destroyed by heat either.
About the producer
Our small organic nursery called Fleischhacker is located in Simmering, a historic vegetable supply district of Vienna. The family business has been in existence for over 100 years and is now being managed by us in the 4th generation.
Sustainability and the conscious use of nature and its resources are very important to us, which is why we have opted for organic farming. On approx. 2 ha we produce seasonal organic vegetables all year round.
Storage recommendation
Cucumbers do not tolerate cold and should therefore not be stored in the refrigerator. If they are stored near peppers, broccoli, spinach, potatoes, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, leeks, peppers, mushrooms or tomatoes, they will wrinkle quickly and spoil faster.
