Origin
The Christmas star bears the botanical name Euphorbia pulcherrima and is also known by the German names Adventsstern, Christstern or Poinsettie. It belongs to the family of spurge (Euphorbiaceae) and is a type of spurge. Originally, the Christmas star is a perennial, evergreen shrub from South America. The star-shaped leaves of the plant already enchanted the botanist Carl Ludwig Willdenow, who gave it the botanical species name Euphorbia pulcherrima - "the most beautiful of the spurge plants".

The Christmas star has only been known as a houseplant in this country since the 1950s. Since then, its popularity has steadily increased, and despite its seasonality, the Christmas star is now one of the best-selling houseplants worldwide.
Caution pets: Christmas stars are poisonous!
As with other types of spurge, the milky sap of the poinsettia contains slightly irritating ingredients. After consumption, small pets such as cats, rabbits, birds or hamsters can experience poisoning. Keep this in mind when purchasing and placing the plant in your home, and wear gloves when repotting and cutting your Christmas star to avoid unnecessary contact with the milky sap. In principle, skin contact is harmless, but the milky sap of the plants can cause allergic reactions in sensitive people.
