Vitamin D, also called cholecalciferol, can be produced by the human body itself. The prerequisite for this is that sufficient UV light reaches the skin. This is why vitamin D is often simply called the "sun vitamin". Daily sunlight is therefore necessary for an adequate supply of vitamin D. The UV-B component of the sun's rays is responsible for converting the vitamin's precursors into its active form.
