Fenivir is a beige to light brown cream for the treatment of cold sores (herpes labialis) caused by herpes simplex.

Fenivir is a beige to light brown cream for the treatment of cold sores (herpes labialis) caused by herpes simplex. The cream should be applied as soon as possible when symptoms occur, when the lips start to "tingle" and/or when swelling/blisters begin to form. It should not be used when crusts have formed. If you do not feel better or even worse after 4 days, contact your doctor.

Fenivir inhibits the ability of the herpes simplex virus to multiply. The healing time, the duration of pain and visible signs of the virus are reduced by up to 24 hours.

What should you consider before using Fenivir?

Fenivir must not be used,
- if you are allergic to penciclovir or any of the other ingredients of this medicine listed in section 6.
- if you are known to be hypersensitive to famciclovir.

Warnings and precautions
Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Fenivir:
- if you are unsure about the cause of the cold sore or if the cold sore gets worse or does not get better.
- if your immune system is impaired.
The cream must not be used in the eyes or around the eyes, in the genital area or on mucous membranes (e.g. in the mouth or nose).

Fenivir should only be used on cold sores on the lips and around the mouth.

Use of Fenivir with other medicines
It is unlikely that the effect of the treatment will be affected if Fenivir cream is used at the same time as other medicines.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using, have recently taken/used or plan to take/use any other medicines.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, or if you suspect you may be pregnant or intend to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.

Pregnancy
Experience with use during pregnancy is limited.

Breast-feeding
There is no information on whether the active ingredient passes into breast milk.

Driving and using machines
Fenivir has no influence on your ability to drive.

Fenivir contains cetyl stearyl alcohol
Fenivir contains cetyl stearyl alcohol, which can cause local skin irritation (e.g. contact dermatitis).

Fenivir contains propylene glycol
This medicine contains 416 mg propylene glycol per gram of cream. Propylene glycol can cause skin irritation.

How should the medicine be taken?

How to use Fenivir?

Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or exactly as agreed with your doctor or pharmacist. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

Adults and adolescents over 12 years of age
Apply as soon as possible after the first symptoms appear (e.g. tingling, itching). Some people do not notice these symptoms. However, Fenivir cream can also be used when the first swelling/blisters have appeared.

1.	Please wash your hands before and after applying the cream.
2.	Squeeze a small amount of cream onto your fingertip.
3.	Apply the cream every 2 hours during the day for 4 days.

If you are treating around mealtimes, you should apply the cream after eating.
It may take some time for the cream to start working. Continue to apply the cream even if the cold sore does not improve immediately. Apply the cream for 4 days unless you have been given other instructions by your doctor.

Use in children
Fenivir cream must not be used in children under 12 years of age.

If you have used more Fenivir than you should
No serious problems are to be expected if you have applied a large amount of the cream at once, the skin may become slightly irritated.

If accidentally swallowed, the cream is not harmful, but may cause irritation in the mouth. No special treatment is necessary.

If a child accidentally uses the medicine in an improper way, please contact your doctor or a hospital.

Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton after "Use by". The expiry date refers to the last day of the month indicated.

What Fenivir contains
- The active substance is 10 mg/g penciclovir (1 %).
- The other ingredients are white petrolatum, liquid paraffin, cetyl stearyl alcohol, propylene glycol, macrogol cetylstearyl ether 1000, red and yellow iron oxide (E172) and purified water.
