What should you consider before taking it?
What should you consider before taking Cevitol?
Cevitol must not be taken,
- if you are allergic to ascorbic acid or any of the other ingredients of this medicine listed in section 6.
- if you suffer from inflammation of the gastric mucosa.
- if you suffer from kidney stones made of oxalate crystals (oxalate stones).
- if you suffer from a disease in which too much iron is stored in the body (thalassemia, hemochromatosis, sideroblastic anemia).
Warnings and precautions
Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Cevitol.
Special care should be taken when taking Cevitol,
- if you suffer from a hereditary disorder of the metabolism of red blood cells (erythrocytic glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency). In the case of high doses (4 g daily), there have been isolated cases of red blood cell dissolution. You must therefore never exceed the specified dosage and should talk to your doctor before using vitamin C.
- if you suffer from severe renal impairment and are on dialysis: You should not take more than 50 to 100 mg of vitamin C per day, as otherwise high oxalate concentrations in the blood (hyperoxalemia) and consequently the formation of oxalate crystals in the kidneys (kidney stones) can occur. In this case, Cevitol is not suitable for you and you should use a lower-dose vitamin C preparation.
- if you are prone to kidney or urinary stones: If you have had multiple kidney stones in the past, you should not take more than 100 to 200 mg of vitamin C daily.
- if you are diabetic and need to have certain laboratory tests done: Ascorbic acid can lead to false-negative values in the glucose oxidase test (urine glucose test) and false-positive values in the Benedict test as a reducing substance. Vitamin C should therefore not be taken for several days before such tests.
As a diabetic, you should also take into account the sugar content of 0.58 g per chewable tablet.
If vitamin C is taken in quantities of several grams, the results of clinical-chemical tests can be affected. This affects the determination of sugar, uric acid, creatinine and inorganic phosphate in the urine. The test for blood in the stool can also give false-negative results. Chemical detection methods based on color reactions can be impaired. Therefore, inform your doctor before any planned examinations if you are taking high doses of vitamin C.
Children and adolescents
There is no experience with the use in children and adolescents.
Taking Cevitol with other medicines
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using, have recently taken/used or intend to take/use any other medicines.
The administration of vitamin C leads to increased absorption of iron and aluminum from the gastrointestinal tract. This should be taken into account especially in the case of reduced kidney function, iron replacement therapy and when taking aluminum-containing medicines for stomach hyperacidity. Therefore, please ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice if you want to use such medicines at the same time as Cevitol.
Ascorbic acid reduces the effect of anticoagulants (medicines that inhibit blood clotting).
Pregnancy and breast-feeding
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, or if you suspect you may be pregnant or intend to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
The need for vitamin C is increased during pregnancy and breast-feeding. If there is a vitamin C deficiency, it should be balanced out, with the recommended daily dose being 110 mg per day during pregnancy and 150 mg per day during breast-feeding. Cevitol is therefore not usually suitable for use during pregnancy and breast-feeding; lower-dose vitamin C preparations should be used. Driving and using machines
Cevitol has no influence on the ability to drive and use machines.
Cevitol contains glucose and sucrose
Please only take Cevitol after consulting your doctor if you know that you suffer from a sugar intolerance. If used over a longer period of time, the sugar contained in the tablets can be harmful to the teeth.
How should the medicine be taken?
How should Cevitol be taken?
Always take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or exactly as agreed with your doctor or pharmacist. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor, the recommended dose for adults is:
1 to 2 chewable tablets 1 to 2 times a day
The vitamin C intake should not exceed a daily maximum of 2000 mg (4 chewable tablets) in adults.
Patients with impaired renal function should take vitamin C in a lower dosage. Please discuss the appropriate dose with your doctor.
The tablets should be chewed well before swallowing.
If you have taken more Cevitol than you should
In high doses, ascorbic acid can lead to diarrhea, nausea and inflammation of the gastric mucosa (gastritis).
If you have taken too much Cevitol, reduce your vitamin C intake and consult your doctor if necessary.
If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
