Otrivin 0.1 % - Nasal Gel is used for various types of colds in adolescents from 12 years of age and adults.
Application
What is Otrivin 0.1 % - Nasal Gel and what is it used for?
Otrivin 0.1 % - Nasal Gel is used for various types of colds in adolescents from
12 years of age and adults.
Otrivin contains the active ingredient xylometazoline. It quickly relieves a blocked nose and facilitates the drainage of secretions; this results in free breathing through the nose.
Otrivin is used to treat a blocked nose caused by colds, hay fever, allergic rhinitis or sinusitis.
The effect of Otrivin begins within 2 minutes and lasts up to 12 hours.
Otrivin, used in the nose, also supports the reduction of swelling of the mucous membrane in the nasopharyngeal space in the case of otitis media.
Otrivin 0.1 % - Nasal Gel is also particularly suitable for facilitating nasal breathing during the night. Otrivin 0.1 % - Nasal Gel is therefore also particularly suitable for treating colds with crust formation.
If you do not feel better or even worse after 1 week, contact your doctor.

- after operations in the nose and ear area (removal of the pituitary gland or surgical interventions, in which the meninges were exposed) Otrivin, like other decongestants, must not be used.
- if taken at the same time as MAO inhibitors (medicines for depression), even within the last 14 days.

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you:

If you experience the first signs of side effects, please speak to your doctor.
If the symptoms persist or if the expected success is not achieved within one week, medical advice is required as soon as possible.
If you react to medicines that have a stimulating effect on the nervous system (sympathomimetics) with signs of insomnia, dizziness, trembling, etc., you should only use Otrivin, like all preparations of the same active ingredient class, with caution.
In the case of prolonged use, misuse of the medicine and overdose of nasal decongestants, it can lead (even after discontinuation) to:
- a medication-induced swelling of the nasal mucosa, a so-called rhinitis medicamentosa (the symptoms of which are very similar to a cold),
- drying out of the nasal mucosa (rhinitis sicca),
- swelling of the nasal mucosa as a counter-reaction after discontinuation or
- a decrease in effectiveness
coming about.
These reactions can in turn make nasal breathing more difficult and lead to the incorrect, permanent use of the medicine.
Otrivin is not intended for use in the eyes or mouth.
Do not exceed the recommended dose, especially in adolescents and the elderly.
Using Otrivin 0.1 % - Nasal Gel together with other medicines
Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using other medicines, have recently taken/used other medicines or intend to take/use other medicines.
Medicines that have a stimulating effect on the nervous system (sympathomimetics) taken at the same time can be intensified in their effect, while those with the opposite effect can be weakened.
The effect of Otrivin on the entire organism can be intensified by certain mood-elevating medicines (MAO inhibitors also within the last 14 days, tri- or tetracyclic antidepressants), especially in the case of overdose.
If beta-blockers are taken at the same time, the amount of Otrivin should be kept as low as possible, as in very rare cases it can lead to temporary shortness of breath due to constriction of the lower respiratory tract and to an increase in blood pressure.
Therefore, tell your doctor or pharmacist which medicines you are taking/using in addition to using Otrivin.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you suspect that you are pregnant or intend to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.
Due to its vasoconstrictive properties, Otrivin should not be used as a precaution during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Driving and ability to operate machinery
Otrivin has no or negligible influence on the ability to drive and use machines.
