Description

You're reading an Auto-translation.

The fruit gets its name Andean berry due to its origin – the Andean region in Peru and Chile. Another name is Cape gooseberry, which comes from the fact that seafarers brought the fruit from South America to the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa by sea during the colonial period and cultivated it there. In addition, the slightly sour taste of the Andean berry is reminiscent of that of the gooseberry.

The roots and leaves of the physalis, which belongs to the nightshade family (Solanaceae), contain toxic alkaloids. The fruits are tasty and can also be easily grown in warm regions in our country.

The fruits of the Cape gooseberry, which are wrapped in lanterns, are edible. They grow as large as a cocktail tomato, taste sweet and sour and have a very high vitamin C content.

Physalis fruits are used in fruit salads or chutneys and are used to decorate desserts. The fruits can also be eaten dried.

About the producers

We currently source physalis from two of our regional partner companies:

The Biobeerengarten Hummel is located in the midst of untouched nature in the idyllic town of Loosdorf in the north-eastern Weinviertel. For more than 30 years now, organic berries such as raspberries, blueberries, golden berries (=physalis), currants (=red, white and black currants), goji berries, table grapes and the unique Weinviertel kiwi have been ripening into aromatically sweet fruits in our garden. The fully ripe organic berries are carefully picked by hand and processed into natural and healthy delicacies of the highest quality. All fruits and products are organically produced - from our own fruits, by hand and by ourselves.

At Biohof Pölzer, organic production has been taking place since 2007, whereby the focus is on the circular economy idea when using our own horse manure. Vegetable cultivation now has an enormous variety of old vegetable types and varieties. From tomatoes in all possible colors and shapes to exotics such as physalis, artichokes etc. with well over 100 varieties, you will find every imaginable fruit vegetable in summer on our farm.

What is special about our company is that almost everything is created on the farm by hand, with great love and care, from the seed to the finished product. Family members from three generations help out together. In our actions and creations, we always try to combine tradition, innovation and sustainability for a clean future.

Storage recommendation

Berries have a short shelf life. They stay fresh the longest if they are stored constantly cool and dry, ideally unwashed in a flat container in the refrigerator. It is important to make sure that they do not lie in their own juice or in condensation water, as this promotes mold growth.
