WHAT IS LEVOCETIRIZINE HEXAL AND WHAT IS IT USED FOR?

Levocetirizine Hexal 5 mg - Film-Coated Tablets contain the active substance levocetirizine.
Levocetirizine Hexal is an anti-allergic medicine. It is used to treat symptoms of allergic diseases, such as:
- allergic rhinitis (including persistent allergic rhinitis)
- chronic hives (chronic idiopathic urticaria)

If you do not feel better or even worse after 3 days, contact your doctor.

What should you be aware of before taking this medicine?

What SHOULD YOU BE AWARE OF BEFORE TAKING LEVOCETIRIZINE HEXAL?
Levocetirizine Hexal must not be taken if

.
  • You are allergic to levocetirizine dihydrochloride, cetirizine, hydroxyzine or any other ingredients listed in section 6 of this medicine
  • .
  • You have severe renal impairment (severe renal insufficiency with a creatinine clearance below 10 ml/min)

Warnings and precautions.
Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Levocetirizine Hexal.

If you have a tendency to be unable to empty your bladder (such as as a result of spinal cord injury or enlargement of the prostate), ask your doctor for advice.
If you have epilepsy or are at risk of seizures, please ask your doctor for advice as the use of Levocetirizine Hexal could increase seizures.

If you are planning to have an allergy test, you should ask your doctor if you should stop using Levocetirizine Hexal for several days. This medicine may affect the result of your allergy test.

Children:
For children under 6 years of age, the use of Levocetirizine Hexal Film-Coated Tablets is not recommended as no dose adjustment is possible with the film-coated tablets.

Taking Levocetirizine Hexal with other medicines.
Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using, have recently taken/used or intend to take/use any other medicinal products.

Take Levocetirizine Hexal with food, drink and alcohol. Alcohol.
Caution is advised when Levocetirizine Hexal is taken with alcohol or other agents that affect the brain.
In sensitive patients, simultaneous administration of Levocetirizine Hexal and alcohol or other agents acting on the brain could lead to an additional decrease in alertness and reduced performance.
Levocetirizine Hexal may be taken with or independently of meals.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding.
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, or if you suspect you may be pregnant or intend to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

Driving and ability to operate machinery.
Caution: This medicinal product may impair the ability to react and drive.

Some patients treated with levocetirizine may experience drowsiness/lightheadedness, tiredness and fatigue. If you intend to drive a vehicle, perform potentially dangerous activities or operate machinery, it is initially recommended to wait and observe your reaction to the medicine. However, in special studies, no impairment of attention, reaction and driving ability was found in healthy test subjects after taking levocetirizine in the recommended dosage.

Levocetirizine Hexal contains lactose.
This medicine contains lactose. Please only take Levocetirizine Hexal after consulting your doctor if you are known to have a sugar intolerance.

How should I take this medicine?

HOW TO TAKE LEVOCETIRIZINE HEXAL?

Always take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
The recommended dose for adults and children aged 6 years and over is one tabletdaily.

Kidney and liver impairment
Patients with impaired kidney function, as well as patients with concomitant impaired liver and kidney function, may be given a lower dose based on the severity of the kidney disease and, in children, additionally on body weight. The dose will be determined by your doctor.

Patients with severely impaired kidney function must not take Levocetirizine Hexal.

Patients with only impaired liver function should take the normal prescribed dose.

Older patients aged 65 years and over
Provided kidney function is normal, no dose adjustment is necessary in older patients.

Use in children
The use of Levocetirizine Hexal 5 mg - Film-Coated Tablets is not recommended for children under 6 years of age, as no dose adjustment is possible with the film-coated tablets.

How and when should you take Levocetirizine Hexal?
The film-coated tablets should be swallowed whole with water. They can be taken with or separately from meals.
The duration of treatment depends on the type, duration and course of your symptoms. Your doctor or pharmacist will advise you on this.

If you have taken a larger amount of Levocetirizine Hexal than you should
If you have taken a larger amount of Levocetirizine Hexal than you should, drowsiness may occur in adults. In children, agitation and restlessness may occur first and then drowsiness.
If you suspect you have taken an overdose of Levocetirizine Hexal, please tell your doctor. He or she will decide what action to take.

If you forget to take Levocetirizine Hexal
Do not take double the dose if you have forgotten to take it before or if you have taken a lower dose than prescribed by your doctor. Take the next dose at the usual time.

If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Store in the original container to protect the contents from moisture.

Keep this medicine out of the reach of children.

You must not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton after "EXP". The expiry date refers to the last day of the month stated.

Contents of the pack and other information
What Levocetirizine Hexal contains
The active substance is levocetirizine.
One film-coated tablet contains 5 mg levocetirizine dihydrochloride corresponding to 4.2 mg levocetirizine.
The other ingredients are microcrystalline cellulose, lactose monohydrate and magnesium stearate (E 572), hypromellose (E 464), titanium dioxide (E 171) and macrogol 400.

What Levocetirizine Hexal looks like and contents of the pack
The film-coated tablets are white to greyish-white oval tablets, domed on both sides, with "L9CZ" embossed on one side and "5" on the other.

The film-coated tablets are packed in PVC/PVDC/aluminium blister packs or OPA/Al/PVC/Al blister packs, in an outer carton.

Pack sizes:
7, 10, 14, 15, 20, 21, 28, 30, 40, 50, 56, 60, 70, 90, 100, 112 or 120 tablets per box or single-dose blister packs of 30 x 1 tablet

Not all pack sizes may be marketed.
