Thealoz® eye drops contain the naturally occurring disaccharide (double sugar) trehalose and protect cells from the effects of dryness. By researching this substance, which is found in plants and animals, it was possible to use the natural defence mechanism against water loss in heat, cold and strong salt formation for the therapy of dry eyes. This is how the innovative eye preparation Thealoz® came into being.
Thealoz® protects the cornea and conjunctiva from the effects of dryness. The active ingredient trehalose has a high water-binding capacity. Water and trehalose together form a moisturising and protective film on the cell membranes. This can reduce the loss of the multidimensional membrane structure due to drought and ultimately cell death. Trehalose counteracts increased salt concentrations (osmoprotection, it penetrates cells of the ocular surface and regulates the salt content), which cause inflammation of the eye in evaporative sicca syndrome (dry eyes due to too much evaporation).
