The passion fruit is spherical or slightly oval, weighs about 90 g on average, with a green, greenish-yellow, yellow, lemon yellow, to slightly reddish mottled thick skin on the outside.
Origin
The passion fruit is one of many species belonging to the passion fruit family. Their origin lies in the subtropical to tropical areas of Africa. Today it is grown in South America, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Kenya, India, Taiwan, Hawai and California.
Tips
After harvesting, the passion fruit shrinks. However, this is not a sign of spoilage, but a sign of post-ripening. Passion fruit can usually be kept in the fridge for 2 weeks after purchase.
Preparation
They are good for eating fresh (cut the fruit in half and spoon out), with fruit salads, ice cream, desserts and mixed drinks. Due to the excellent intense flavour, passion fruit can be used to enhance the taste of almost all fruit juices and cocktails.
For a refreshing juice put the pulp of 1 passion fruit in a blender with 300ml of water. Mixed briefly, the pulp separates from the seeds. The juice is then strained to finally separate the seeds from the aromatic yellow/orange juice. Return the juice to the blender and add a tablespoon of sugar to taste.
