Pimientos de Padrón
The origins of Pimientos de Padrón date back to the 16th century, when they were brought to Galicia by Franciscan monks. Today, they are mainly cultivated in the municipality of Padrón and the surrounding areas, where the mild oceanic climate and fertile soils provide ideal conditions for their growth. The pods ripen on the bushes of the Pimientos de Padrón plants and are harvested by experienced farmers with great care by hand to ensure their highest quality.
Usage
Pimientos de Padrón are famous for their special culinary characteristic: While most of these small peppers are mild and slightly sweet in taste, about every tenth pod hides a surprising element – a piquant spiciness. This unique feature has earned the pods the affectionate nickname "Spanish roulette gun", as you never know exactly which pod contains a slight spiciness.
Traditionally, Pimientos de Padrón are fried in olive oil and served sprinkled with sea salt. They are perfect as tapas or a side dish and are a popular snack in Spain, enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. Besides their use as tapas, they can also be used as an ingredient in salads, paellas and other Mediterranean dishes to add a spicy note to them.
Storage
To preserve the freshness and quality of Pimientos de Padrón, they should be stored in the refrigerator after purchase. It is best to place them in a paper bag or a perforated plastic bag to control moisture and ensure a longer shelf life. Ideally, you should consume them within three to five days to maintain their intense flavour.
About the producers
Our farm is located in the Lower Austrian region of Tullnerfeld. We love the varied work with and in nature, the fields and meadows around the farm and life on the outskirts of the city.
Since our way of working includes a lot of mindfulness towards nature and careful handling of the soil, we also try to pass on these aspects to our customers by imparting background knowledge and working techniques in modern agriculture.
We at Gschaiderhof are young farm managers and are always looking for interesting crops.
We produce a wide range of products, including oil pumpkins for our pumpkin seed oil and our snack kernels, but also garlic, fruit vegetables, wheat, corn, soya and sugar beets.
Storage recommendation
Peppers are best stored at a temperature of 5–10° C, preferably not in the refrigerator
