Mustard from the city of Meaux in the Île de France is today - quite wrongly - far less well-known than the Dijon mustard offered in all the supermarkets in the world: Characteristic of Moutarde de Meaux is the relatively coarse grinding of the mustard seeds as well as a special mixture of herbs and spices, which provides the unmistakable, spicy taste. Mustard production in Meaux dates back at least to the time of Charlemagne, who had ordered the monasteries in the area to produce mustard. The quality of the mustard from Meaux was so extraordinary that Moutarde de Meaux became an official part of the table of the King of France in 1632. Since 1890, the company that emerged from the Pommery mustard mill has been the only one that still produces genuine Moutarde de Meaux. The mustard goes perfectly with cold meat, sausage and grilled food.
