The cucumber plant is a fruiting vegetable in very different shapes and sizes. Cucumbers grow up to 40 cm long and about 10 cm thick. They are usually uniformly shaped, sometimes cylindrical or tapered at the ends, and of smooth, moderately ridged skin.

Origin

Cucumbers were already known to the Greeks and Romans. They only penetrated more northerly Europe in the Middle Ages. Due to their subtropical home, cucumbers have high demands on the location, especially in terms of warmth. Cucumbers are grown worldwide, mainly in greenhouses. The most important growing countries in Europe are the Mediterranean countries, the Netherlands and Germany. Imports come mostly from the Netherlands, Greece and Spain to ensure a year-round supply.

Tips

When buying, look for a smooth, evenly coloured skin and a blunt end to the fruit. Lightening of colour is a sign of over-ripeness.

Preparation

Cucumbers can be used peeled and unpeeled. In our country, cucumbers are mainly eaten raw in salads, on their own or together with other vegetables such as tomatoes, lettuce, beans, peppers, etc., seasoned with dill and other herbs. But they are also very popular in hot cuisine as braised vegetables or stuffed with spicy meat filling.
