What should you consider before taking it?

What should you consider before using Buscopan?

Buscopan must not be used,

• if you are allergic to hyoscine-N-butylbromide or bromides as well as to any of the other ingredients of this medicine listed in section 6,
• if you suffer from a certain form of muscle weakness (myasthenia gravis),
• if you have been diagnosed with an organic narrowing of the gastrointestinal tract,
• if you have been diagnosed with a paralytic or mechanical intestinal obstruction (ileus),
• if you have a pathological enlargement of the colon.

Warnings and precautions
Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Buscopan

• if you have increased intraocular pressure (tendency to angle-closure glaucoma),
• if you suffer from chronic constipation,
• if you have difficulty urinating,
• if you suffer from a fast, irregular heartbeat (tachyarrhythmias),
• if you have sudden onset, severe, cutting pain,
• if your symptoms worsen rapidly,
• if the pain worsens when touched,
• if your body temperature is elevated,
• if you feel sick or vomit,
• if your blood pressure is low, you feel weak or have collapsed,
• if you notice blood in your stool or unexpected changes in bowel movements (e.g. diarrhea),
• if you have lost weight quickly and unexpectedly,
• if you are currently taking other medicines to treat abdominal pain and cramps as prescribed by your doctor.

You may only use Buscopan 10 mg - Suppositories after consulting a doctor if any of the above circumstances apply to you.
Use of Buscopan together with other medicines
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using, have recently taken/used or intend to take/use any other medicines.
Ask your doctor for advice before using Buscopan 10 mg - Suppositories if you are taking any of the following medicines at the same time, as the effects of these medicines may be increased by Buscopan 10 mg - Suppositories:

• Antihistamines (for allergic conditions),
• Amantadine-containing medicines (for Parkinson's disease),
• Quinidine or disopyramide-containing medicines (for heart rhythm disorders),
• Tri- and tetracyclic antidepressants (for depression),
• Other anticholinergics (e.g. tiotropium, ipratropium - for respiratory problems or atropine-like active ingredients),
• Antipsychotics (for psychoses),
• β-Sympathomimetics (for respiratory problems).

You should also ask your doctor for advice if you are taking medicines to correct bowel movements (e.g. metoclopramide-containing medicines) at the same time as Buscopan 10 mg - Suppositories, as this can reduce the effect of both medicines.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you suspect you may be pregnant or intend to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
There is insufficient data on the use in pregnant women and on the passage of the active substance into breast milk. Therefore, the use of Buscopan 10 mg - Suppositories should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding as a precaution.
Driving and using machines
No studies have been conducted on the effects on driving and using machines. However, if used correctly, no impairments in active participation in road traffic or in operating machines are to be expected.

How should the medicine be taken?

How to use Buscopan?

Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or exactly as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. The recommended dose for adults, adolescents and children over
6 years is:
Use 1 suppository as needed. You can use 1 suppository several times a day, the maximum daily dose should not exceed 6 suppositories.
Children over 6 years and adolescents should only use Buscopan 10 mg - Suppositories after consulting a doctor.
For rectal use.
The suppositories are removed from the wrapper and inserted into the rectum with the pointed end first.
Children under 6 years
Buscopan 10 mg - Suppositories are not recommended for use in children under 6 years of age due to the high active ingredient content.
Duration of use
Buscopan 10 mg - Suppositories should not be used for more than 3 days without consulting a doctor.
If you have used more Buscopan than you should
If you have accidentally used more than the prescribed dose, please inform a doctor. He will decide on any necessary measures.
Urinary retention, dry mouth, rapid heartbeat, inhibition of bowel movements, drowsiness and temporary visual disturbances (disturbance of the eyes' ability to adapt to different distances, glaucoma attacks [triggering of glaucoma]) may occur.

If you forget to use Buscopan
Continue using it at the next time. Do not use double the amount if you have forgotten the previous use.
If you stop using Buscopan
Buscopan 10 mg - Suppositories are only used when needed and should be discontinued after the symptoms have subsided.
If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Keep this medicine out of the reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton as "usable until" and on the blister strip as "use by". The expiry date refers to the last day of the month indicated.
Do not dispose of medicines in wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of the medicine when you stop using it. You help to protect the environment.
