The Hokkaido pumpkin is a classic in autumn and is one of the most popular pumpkin varieties ever. No wonder, because it is a true all-rounder and can be processed into many delicacies.
Origin
The name suggests it: The tasty pumpkin originally comes from Japan from the eponymous island of Hokkaido. Towards the end of the 19th century, the Americans introduced the rice nut pumpkin there, from which the locals then cultivated the Hokkaido. Incidentally, the pumpkin is called "Uchiki Kuri" in Japanese. The pumpkin also thrives in the German climate, but has only been cultivated here for about 25 years.
Compared to its relatives, the Hokkaido is quite small and usually weighs 1-3 kg. The quantity is therefore also ideal for small households and you don't have to eat pumpkin all week. In addition, the Hokkaido can be processed particularly quickly and easily, as you can eat its thin skin and do not have to peel it. Its taste is slightly sweet and mildly nutty.
Use
The Hokkaido pumpkin is a true all-rounder. It can be cooked in the oven just as well as processed as a soup, bread or other delicacy. From creamy pumpkin soups to pumpkin pie to chili con pumpkin.
