Background:
The pig is probably the most common symbol of luck and appears in idioms - such as "having had a pig" - as a lucky charm also in our language. The pig has had its meaning as a symbol of luck since the Middle Ages. At that time, the pig was considered a sacred animal due to its fertility and strength and stood for prosperity and wealth, because only wealthy people could keep a pig and thus had enough food. The idiom "having had a pig" comes from the medieval warlike competitions. The loser received a pig as consolation. If he had not been seriously injured, he had at least "had a pig".
