Pesto Verde – what is it?
Fancy a little Italian lesson? “Verde” means “green”. So our Pesto Verde owes its name to the ingredients that give it its colour – in this case 31% Italian basil. Add some sunflower oil, cashew nuts, tofu, pine nuts, a little garlic and a pinch of salt and you have a full-bodied flavour. But now back to the question of what pesto actually is. Pesto comes from Bella Italia and is an uncooked, pasty sauce that is usually served with pasta. The first traditional pesto was made as early as 1863 and probably originated from a Roman herb and cheese sauce or is a medieval variation of a standard Roman spice. The best-known variety is probably “Pesto genovese”, which contains pine nuts and Parmesan cheese in addition to basil. Red pesto also tastes great and is also available in our shop. It is called “Pesto rosso”, because rosso = red. The aromatic sauce gets its colour from concentrated tomato paste. As the icing on the cake, cheese is usually added to the pesto pasta dishes. For the vegan version, we recommend spicy yeast flakes.
Delicious recipes with pesto
Pesto and pasta go together like Max and Moritz. But if you think pesto only tastes good with spaghetti, tortellini, penne and co., you're wrong! Have you ever eaten pesto with potatoes, refined your pizza or salad with it, spread it on bread or enjoyed it in lasagne or perhaps refined chicken dishes with it? If not, it's high time! There are countless ways to use this green miracle. Pesto is also used with salmon, in dips or even in yeast plait. What?! Yeast plait is sweet, you think. That's right, but the hearty yeast version is definitely worth a try. We have even more ideas for you: Ever heard of the pesto flower? No, it doesn't grow in your neighbour's garden, but it's a real party cracker! First, make a dough from flour, yeast, water, a little salt and oil, divide it into three parts and roll out all the parts into circles. Then spread our green pesto on the first circle, place the second circle on top, spread pesto on it again and place the third circle on top. Now cut the “cake” into equal pieces and twist the individual pieces until you have a flower shape. You can also find the whole thing illustrated on the Internet.
