BIO winegrower grapes - Grüner Veltliner

By far the most important white wine variety in Austria is the Grüner Veltliner, which originates from a Traminer cross. An ancient vine found in St. Georgen in Burgenland points to the second parent variety.

Grüner Veltliner is by far the most important white wine variety in Austria and has gained worldwide fame and popularity towards the end of the last century. The variety is fertile and therefore requires yield regulation, thrives particularly well on deep loess soils, does not tolerate drought well, is sensitive during flowering, susceptible to downy mildew, red fire blight and chlorosis.

Wine

Grüner Veltliner produces all quality levels from light, acidic wine to highly ripe Prädikat wine. The location and yield are very decisive for the quality. Spicy, peppery wines or fruity notes of stone fruit are desirable.

About the producer

Heinrich and Marie-Sophie Hartl are one of the leading winemaking couples in the thermal region south of Vienna. Their family has been producing complex red wines from the leading varieties Pinot Noir and St. Laurent for 6 generations, as well as fine whites that are always fruity, complex and well-balanced.

A special focus is placed here on the autochthonous Rotgipfler and Zierfandler, both perfect food companions for hearty and spicy dishes. Numerous awards in the SALON Österreich Wein and international competitions (IWC, Decanter World Wine Awards) prove that Heinrich and Marie-Sophie are able to handle the versatile terroir of the thermal region excellently.

The family business is a founding member of the "Burgundermacher", who produce some of the best Burgundy wines in Austria.
