From the Turkish turban to the Dutch treasure.

What many people don't know: Originally, the tulip comes from Iran, Afghanistan and Kazakhstan. Nomads then took the flowers to Turkey, where rich sultans adorned their turbans with a tulip blossom. This is how the flower got its name: "tulipan" means turban.

From Turkey, the tulip found its way to Central and Western Europe around the middle of the 16th century - where it soon became an invaluable treasure. Especially in the Netherlands, prices rose immeasurably at the end of the 16th century during the "tulip mania". In the end, entire canal houses were paid for with tulip bulbs - until the bubble finally burst. But even after the end of the tulip mania, the cheerful tulip is still one of the most popular flowers - not only in spring in the Netherlands.

Blossoming diversity

With over 150 tulip species and thousands of different varieties, flower lovers are spoiled for choice when buying tulips today. In addition to simple and double flowers with several rows of petals, striking fringed varieties, parrot tulips with wavy petals and elegant lily tulips are now available.

CARE TIPS

This is how your tulips stay fresh for a long time:

  • Choose a vase that is high enough: tulips will grow a few more centimetres
  • At home, first place the tulips in a vase for an hour, still wrapped in paper. The tulips will soak up water and straighten up
  • Always use tap water at room temperature
  • Cut the stems (diagonally or straight is irrelevant) and remove any excess leaves
  • Place the vase in a cool, not too sunny place and not near a fruit bowl
  • Tulips are thirsty, so it's best to check the water in the vase daily and top it up if necessary
  • If the tulips have grown too tall, you can cut the stems again

The filled premium tulips are hand-picked daily. Due to the particularly gentle cultivation method and the complete absence of pesticides, they are particularly strong and magnificent in colour – so you can enjoy a completely residue-free tulip bouquet!

About the supplier

Blumen Malecek is located in Eichgraben in the Vienna Woods. The family business in its 3rd generation has been active in horticulture for more than 60 years and has always focused on the best quality in flowers and plants.

Since 2000, Georg Malecek has been managing the business. The year begins with the cultivation of beautiful tulips, which are sold for resale and for own consumption in the two shops in Vienna and Maria Anzbach. In the greenhouses, 120,000 pieces of the most diverse varieties are grown on water cultivation from January to the beginning of April.

Other spring bloomers such as hyacinths, daffodils, grape hyacinths and many more round off the self-produced spring range.

Blumen Malecek is known for the quality of its summer flowers, which are grown in its own greenhouses from April onwards. More than 200 different plant varieties for beds and balconies are produced, so that every customer wish can be fulfilled.

Vegetable plants, whether conventional varieties or rarities, as well as many different types of herbs, are produced with great care. Even the self-produced compost is used here. Finally, the gardening year at Blumen Malecek comes to an end with its own Christmas stars. Particular emphasis is also placed on special quality here.
